In this workshop, Donald G. Groesser, PLS, will share insights from his 40-year career as a Professional Land Surveyor, covering his professional journey from mechanical theodolites and hand drafting to global positioning systems and 3D models. We will explore an overview of the profession of land surveying focused on the common areas of interest for GIS Professionals, including datums, boundaries, surfaces, and remote sensing. The relationship between mapping and the features as located on-the-ground are paramount to the profession of land surveying and has often created angst between surveyors and the GIS community. There will be a focus on the current PA laws regarding the definition of land surveying and the related licensing laws, with hope to encourage collaboration between our professions with a shared goal of protecting the general welfare of the public and the contribution of our skills to society.

Topics Covered:

What Is Surveying: A brief history of land measurement related to property rights and ownership.

The Development of Surveying: The evolution of measurement techniques in the era of global positioning.

What Makes a Surveyor: The role of the professional surveyor and the critical need for collaboration.
